LOCAL NON-PROFIT PROMOTES HIGHER EDUCATION
THROUGH MT. TOP COLLEGE SUMMER BOOT CAMP
BALDWIN PARK, Calif.—MAPS 4 College’s Mountain Top College Prep 3.0 Summer Boot Camp is coming up. The third annual, weeklong college readiness program will take place in the City of Baldwin Park from Aug. 12-20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost to attend is based on income level and residency; the College Boot Camp is FREE for local low-income Baldwin Park residents.
“The idea behind this camp is for students to continue their educational pipeline from high school to college and beyond,” said Sarai Koo, CEO and founder of MAPS. “The summer camp will prepare students for the college application process and provide them with the resources needed to succeed in college and in life.”
College admission officers and directors, college counselors, and student leaders will be presenting a myriad of workshops to assist students preparing for college. Workshops and information sessions will include, “Find your Best College Match”, “Financial Aid”, “How to Complete your College Application and Personal Statement”, and “Enhancing your Relationship and Communication Skills” workshops. In addition, other activities consist of attending a college fair, college campus tours, a private panel discussion by Harvey Mudd College, creating a resume, and participation in an indoor kart racing activity.
Student leaders, who will provide guidance to peers, will include participants in the MAPS 4 College Preparatory Mentoring Program. These leaders will attend an additional three-day leadership training session to prepare them to assist others at the College Boot Camp.
Yadira Guevara, a senior at Baldwin Park High School, 17, said, “As a Student Leader, I’m excited about sharing what I’ve learned about FAFSA and Cal Grant with everyone in the program”.
The event usually takes place at Lollard Ranch in Lytle Creek, CA. However, this year, MAPS, because of the close proximity to students in Baldwin Park, was moved to the Baldwin Park community. Previously, over 50 students and families participated in the program.
“Prior participants have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with their friends and meeting college admission officers,” said Koo. “They learned a great deal and cannot wait for the upcoming College Boot Camp in August.”
